Mimi and Snowman

Hi everyone, a card today for Friday Sketchers and a really great sketch by Carole, Cute Card Thursday with a challenge of 'Lilac', OCC and a challenge of 'Snowmen or snowflakes', Arty Girlz where the challenge is 'favourite colours' and finally Stamp Something with a challenge to include some black in your card. Once again lots of lovely challenges to combine!

I've used my gorgeous 'Mimi and Snowman' stamp designed by the incredibly talented Janet Roberts at Pink Gem Designs. Janet's new stamps are all so gorgeous, stamp beautifully and are wonderful to colour. I water coloured my image with distress inks, distressed the edges, stamped the sentiment and snowflake and then mounted on black card over the various layers of Lilac/violet bazzil card. Everything is mounted on a violet card blank which I scored for some texture and to finish I did some doodling and added the gem and fibre. TFL.

Elzybells Christmas

Hi everyone, a card today for Dutch Dare where the challenge is to 'put a hole in your card', Secret Crafter with a challenge of 'decoupage', ABC with a challenge of 'snow' and Everbody Art Challenge with a challenge of 'winter/Christmas', lots of lovely challenges to put together!
I stamped the gorgeous Elzybells girl with her sledge from the Dinky Christmas set and water coloured with Ranger Distress inks then cut out using the nestabilities label one die, edged and dotted with glamour dust. I stamped the image again, water coloured and cut out the presents and layered with gel glue on the image. To add the hole element of Dutch Dare I die cut a piece of ivory bazzil bling with the labels die one size up from the image size, sponged the edges with black distress ink and layered this on the beige card blank over a piece of snowflake patterned paper, not sure of the brand it was an offcut but might be DCWV Christmas stack. The image is mounted on dimension tape in the centre of the aperture I did a bit of doodling, punched some snowflakes, added gems to their centres and stamped the Woodware sentiment to finish. TFL.

Give me the hunny!

Hi everyone, a card today for House Mouse where this week the challenge is polka dots and also for OCC where there's a lovely sketch by Denise to follow. The HM image is marker coloured and I've added some stickles for a bit of sparkle. Papers are edge distressed and sponged with ranger distress ink and it's all layered onto a card made from Canford red card. The sentiment is from a Woodware set and I added some very funky fibre which was a gift and a blingy self adhesive jewel. There's also a little enamel charm tied on to the fibre knot but I didn't notice it wasn't facing the right way until after I uploaded it. TFL.

Christmas Baubles card two

Hi everyone, another take on the Christmas Baubles image for this card and another way to use the image. The download has a transparent background which means it can be printed on patterned paper and used for paper piecing. I printed three sheets of gingham patterned paper, put them back through the printer and printed the baubles image on top of them all. I then cut and pieced the various patterned pieces around the baubles image printed on white card. The background is the offcuts from each of the three gingham sheets arranged to give a patchwork effect and I've doodled stitching around these and another piece that was cut on one edge with a scalloped blade for the centre panel. The plain image is cut with the largest of the Labels one nestability dies, the edges doodled and sponged with ranger distress in black soot. I stamped around the edges with various small stamps from a Woodware Christmas sentiment set. Apart from a piece of white ribbon under the die cut there is absolutely no bling or glitter on this card which must be a first!!!! TFL.

Basic Grey Challenges 12

Hi everyone a card today for Basic Grey where the challenge this week is embossing. I've used a new digital design that I've made and which I've added a link to in my sidebar for anyone who'd like to download and use it for their Christmas cards, it's for personal use only of course. If you do use it, I'd love it if you'd come and let me know so that I can visit you and take a look. I've pencil coloured the image and blended with Sansodor, added a some stickles and clear sparkle gel pen then distressed the edges and sponged with distress inks. Image is matted on Bazzil card over the background of Basic Grey Wassail papers and the horizonatal panel is embossed with the CB Swiss Dots folder. Added the little Christmas charm on some red cord to finish.

Thank you so much to everyone who's passed me the the awards below, they're so much appreciated and make me smile. Unfortunately I can't find anyone that I know who hasn't received them so I'll pass them to anyone visits who doesn't have them. Thanks again. TFL.

Sally-Ann's Cupcake, Grab-A-Doodle-Do

Hi everyone, hope you all had a good weekend. I've made a card for Cupcake craft challenge where this week the challenge is sweets and treats. Sally-Ann's (grab-a-doodle-do) cupcake images were perfect for this, the only problem was deciding which one to use as there are six included in the download and they're all gorgeous! The cupcake is marker coloured and stickled on the icing, added some pink doodled dots, a photo corner cut from bazzil bling and matted on some bright pink bazzil card cut with a square nestie. Don't know who makes the background paper as it's from my scrap folder. Cut the sentiment with Go Create dies from the Milan alphabet (thanks Sandra for putting me right on these!!!). Flowers and gems are from stash and I added a bit more doodling on the centre cream flower and around the edge of the card. TFL.

Bee Costume

Hi everyone, I accidentially uploaded the new Christmas blog header I've made when I was testing it out but as I'd done it, I decided to leave it even if it is a bit early, it makes me feel more Christmassy. A card today for Friday Sketchers where there's a great sketch to follow from Bea, Dutch Dare and a challenge of 'three flowers' and ABC with a challenge of 'ribbon'. The Penny Black 'Bee Costume' image (Tx) is marker coloured, stickled, edge sponged/distressed and layered over Black Magic card which is also edge distressed/torn, scored and slightly sanded and gorgeous lime spotted Scenic Route paper which was part of my prize from the House Mouse challenge a couple of weeks ago. Added ribbon, flowers, more stickles and Imaginisce sentiment to finish. It seems to be all tall cards this week, it's nice for a change but they're definitely harder to photograph! TFL.

Sally-Ann's Lilly, Grab-A-Doodle-Do

Hi everyone, a card today for A spoon full of sugar where the challenge this week is 'Blooming Marvelous'. Sally-Ann at (Grab-a-doodle-do) has just released the gorgeous 'Lilly' on her download site, she's so cute and lovely I had to buy her immediately! I also decided to make another DL size card as it makes a change from the squares and I enjoyed making this size for yesterday's card, I've folded it as an upright concertina. I hadn't planned on spending quite so much time on it and as I ran out of tape runner glue right at the beginning I had to use lift and peel tape which always takes forever. It's a bit rough in some areas but as it took a while I'm uploading it!! The three gorgeous images of Lilly are marker coloured and mounted on various colours of Bazzil card with backgrounds of Basic Grey papers from the 'Two Scoops' collection. I cut nestabilities hearts from the papers and collaged these in the centre panel and on the front, also added punched and shaped flowers, stickles, half pearls, sticky ribbon, some doodling for stitching and little tabs rounded with a corner punch for the sentiments. TFL.

The High Hopes 'Reindeer Games' stamp is marker coloured and highlighted for the snow element with white inkessentials pen and glamour dust (it's so lovely and sparkly IRL) and sponged around the edges with Ranger distress ink. The papers are all Basic Grey 'Wassail' which I've cut in line with the sketch and edged with a distressing tool. Added buttons and sparkly snowflake brads from stash to decorate along with the sentiment which is corner punched, edged with distress ink and a distressing tool. TFL.

The front of the card is more 'Wassail' paper for the background, two nestabilities die cuts, holly leaves and stars cut from gold pearlescent card. Added gold liquid pearls to decorate. Sleeping House Mouse

Hi everyone, a card for Secret Crafter where the challenge this week is 'cute as a button' and also for House Mouse and a challenge of 'Use your junk'. Not sure if I can really justify the junk element as I couldn't find anything suitable and so searched in my oddments box and found the buttons, I actually found lots of buttons in colours I didn't know I had! Hopefully this is ok. The House Mouse image is marker coloured and dotted with glamour dust, mounted on bazzil card and dimension tape, the scalloped quarter circles were cut with nestabilities from Basic Grey 'Euphoria' paper. Added ribbon, buttons and Elzybells sentiment to finish. TFL.

Penny Black 'Wish Big'

Hi everyone, a card for Penny Black Saturday where the challenge is to use only a sentiment stamp but no image and also for Secret Crafter Saturday Challenge where there's a lovely sketch by Wendy to follow. I've used Basic Grey Wassail papers (which I've been hoarding!) for the squares and strip at the bottom, these are layered on white and dark red bazzil and gold pearlised card cut with various nestability dies. The bottom strip of gold is cut with the my scalloped cutter blade and looking at it now I wish I'd punched some holes or something as I think it looks a bit bland. I added white ribbon, Imaginisce poinsettia flowers highlighted with stickles and the gem to finish. TFL.

Little Hanglar boy

Hi everyone, here's a card for A Spoon full of sugar where the challenge is 'a card for a child', Everybody Art Challenge and a colour challenge of blue and brown and Papertake Weekly where there's a great sketch by Dawny which I love if only I could work out how to do those inverted corners! If anyone can point me in the right direction I'll be grateful. I ended up hand cutting them and they're bigger than I would have liked although I do quite like the effect. I tried using a circle punch but that wouldn't work when part of it was off the paper! Back to the card, I used a very precious Hangler image (Sandra x), marker coloured it and sponged the edges. Added a rub on sentiment on a nestie cut circle and mounted over the background of I think, Doodlebug paper and a blue card blank. Doodled with a white gel pen and a blue marker to finish. TFL.

My Sister and Me

Hi everyone, I've made a tag today for Dutch Dare where the challenge is 'anything but a card' and also for Tag you're it with a challenge of 'Tic-Toc', not sure if I'm in time (lol) for TGI, hope I am! I started with a thick white card tag and two thick card die cut flowers, all these were sponged with Ranger distress inks and edged with black. I stamped over this in black with an Elzybells sentiment stamp 'we laugh, we cry, we make time fly, best friends are we, my sister and me' which I love and also with a clock face by Stamps Away. I added the huge gems which were a present from my lovely friend in Canada, gold liquid pearls (I took a close up shot of the tag because I think the pearls look like icing!), stickles and oddments of ribbon for decoration. TFL.

Sally-Ann's Fairy

Hi everyone, this card is for Cute Card Thursday where the challenge is 'Angels and Fairies', Basic Grey with a challenge of 'Glitter' and also Sketch Saturday where there's a lovely sketch to follow. I've used this gorgeous and very pretty little fairy designed by the super talented Sally-Ann (Love to doodle) and available from Grab-A-Doodle-Do, which I printed out and pencil coloured. I find that if I leave the download to dry completely for a good while after printing I don't get any bleed at all from the black ink. I added silver glitter, doodling with a pink glitter gel pen and mounted on pink Bazzil card lifted with dimension tape. The Woodware sentiment is stamped in pink ink and mounted on the same card cut with a nestie labels one die. Background papers are BG Eurphoria, dew drop and butterfly bead from stash. TFL.

Happy Hopper apple eater

The post title reminds me of an old song the Purple people eater, oh dear, a very old song when I think about it! This card is for House Mouse Challenge where this week there's a recipe to follow, the card must include ribbon, two buttons, felt and a scalloped edge and as I've followed Trina's great sketch (which I flipped) I'm also entering A spoon full of sugar. I really love this little hopper image which I've pencil coloured and blended with Sansodor. I tore the edges of a rectangle of black magic card to reveal the tan coloured side and mounted these over the spot and black check background paper, then a red card blank. The two side elements of the sketch are a strip of felt and on top a strip of ric-rac which combines three of the HM requirements as the ric-rac has a scalloped edge LOL! There's a little red punched heart and buttons from stash with a knotted string on each. Sentiment is white rub on letters. TFL. Have a great week. Back soon, Chris

Ink and Rubber Challenge 1

Hi everyone and this card is for the new Ink and Rubber challenge blog for all things Stampin' Up! I only have a couple of very old SU sets at the moment and I've used the three flower stamp from the big flowers set. I stamped with a brilliance three colour twilight inkpad which is pretty and shimmery but doesn't seem to want to dry, I edged the white card with it, it went everywhere! I'll heat set it a bit next time to see if that helps. A simple card really, I used a scalloped cutter blade at the bottom of the white, added the ribbon, rub on sentiment, gems and doodled around the edge with a white gel pen. TFL.

Taking Photographs

Hi again, a couple of my blogging friends have asked me how I take my photographs so I thought I'd do a post with some ideas. I'm sure there are many tips and tricks out there already but if this helps anyone I'll be very happy.

Firstly I don't do anything very special and I'm certainly no expert. Sometimes it's very difficult to get good shots and particularly if the card is made with certain colours predominant such as lilac, yellow and red. Sometimes when photographing a difficult colour I'll do it under a lamp even if the daylight is good as I get a better result. I don't have any special equipment such as a light box or any extra lights and have a standard, mid range, automatic digital camera which cost about £70. I set the camera on automatic mode on the dial on top of the camera. There are lots of other settings on this dial such as video, scene etc. I'm sure I need to experiment more with the other settings.

This picture
shows the
settings I use
on my camera for every
photograph I take of my cards
day or night bearing in mind that the dial on the top of the camera is set to automatic.

I'm sure that different equipment will have different settings but I think that the flash settings and macro function are usually easy to find on the main camera buttons or in the camera menu and most digital cameras have macro.

These two photographs show before and after editing. In the day time I find somewhere to take the picture where there is indirect light to cut down on glare (although I don't always manage it). Camera settings are as above. I put white paper behind and below the card which helps to bring out the colours and will try and angle the card to try and pick up sparkly areas. This doesn't always work. In order to pick up sparkle you need two lights set at different angles I'm told.

I use photoshop for editing and everyone will have different editing software but I believe that most have editing filters. Firstly I crop out the space around the card but always leave a good border as it's easier on the eye not to have the card taking up the whole area, a little space around the card is good. I then adjust the levels, as I have a full version of photoshop I do this manually but there is also an automatic levels function in most editing programs which does it all for you. This filter corrects brightness. Next filter is Contrast and again there are manual and automatic filters. This is the filter that gives definition to the photograph giving a less flat and more three dimensional result. Lastly the colour filter and again automatic and manual depending on the program used and this can also be used. I probably wouldn't use this as my camera seems to take fairly good to original colour photographs and the filter can change a lot of things that you don't want to change, but you can try it and take it off if you don't like the effect it gives. One extra thing that I do on daylight pictures is to add a feathered white border. The last thing I do is to sharpen and again I'm not sure about software other than photoshop but I'm sure most have a sharpening function. I don't always sharpen the picture, sometimes it can be perfectly ok without it, and I only ever sharpen very slightly, too much and the picture becomes grainy.

The most important thing of all is your original photograph. You can't make a bad photograph look that great. If you start off with a fairly good photo by placing it in good indirect light and playing with the settings on your camera, then it shouldn't need much in the way of correcting. There are some days that I just don't get good photographs!

Photographing at night or in very bad light is the same as most of the above except that I place my card directly under a lamp. Sometimes under a small desk lamp which creates a more moody and shadowy effect and sometimes under a daylight bulb. Everything else I do the same as above. Here are a couple of photos the first one to show the set up when I take a photo under the desk lamp and the second one the photo taken closer and after editing. On the after shot there is some glare at the top of the card and I could have angled it better but I don't mind it. I hope this helps and if you made it to the bottom of this post I like you very much! At the end of the day I'm no expert but this is what I do with my pictures and mostly they come out ok. Sledging Hedgies

Hi everyone, a card for Penny Black and Papertake weekly where this week the themes are 'sparkling' and also for Basic Grey and a challenge of Christmas.

For my card I've used a gorgeous PB sledging hedgies image (thanks T x) which is marker coloured, and stickled for highlights. The holly leaf border around the nestie cut oval is made with two Kars punches that are a set. The first punch cuts a flap and the second which you position over the flap is the holly leaf. The flap allows the leaves to slide over the edge of the card. I cut these from green bazzil card and glittered them with gold stickles. The background papers are Basic Grey figgy pudding which have been edge distressed and layered on red bazzil. I sandwiched the satin ribbon between two of the paper layers and the image is mounted on foam tape. Finished off with a sentiment and gem.

A flower for you

Hi everyone, a card for Dutch Dare where the challenge this week is a colour combination of pink, black and purple. I've used a Pink Petticoat image download (I'm addicted to these) which I've coloured with markers and a purple sparkly gel pen. The paper behind the image is also PP and is a leopard print in purple and black, this and the image are matted on purple bazzil card. I've embossed the card base with the CB Swirls folder, added the purple ribbon and some doodling to finish. TFL.

Coffee cup mouse

My second card today for House Mouse 'all natural' challenge, Papertake Weekly sketch and Cute Card Thursday 'cheers'. I used this cute little HM mouse in a coffee cup which is marker coloured and sponged with distress inks. The gorgeous Scribble Scrabble backing papers were a gift from my lovely friend Tania (x) and I've used fairly neutral tones in line with the HM challenge together with some plaited string threaded through punched holes and also twirled into a circle to make a button shape. Added stickles and liquid pearls for froth to the cup and the HM sentiment to finish. TFL.

Hi everyone and here's my card for the Whiff of Joy Challenge of Red and Green and Friday Sketchers. I've used my Charlotte Angel (thank you T x) stamp which I stamped twice and coloured with markers, I cute out the top part of the wings from the second image and decoupaged over the main image, cut out with a nestie oval, doodled and sponged the edges with distress ink and did the same with the sentiment. The background paper is Basic Grey Figgy pudding and the bottom strip is the reverse side of the paper all layered up on dark green bazzil which I stamped with a snowflake stamp in versamark ink and then added stickles to highlight. Flowers, brad, ribbon and gems from stash. TFL
